Sri Lanka 2007: Murali's record put to song

By Stephen Brenkley

A song was released yesterday marking Muttiah Muralitharan's world record of Test wickets. It is possible to imagine at least another two score commemorative trinkets and marketing opportunities yet, given the way the country has been gripped by the event. Signed, limited edition first day covers are probably already worth a few bob and nobody has started producing the mugs and plates yet.

Spin Wizard Murali, written a by Harold Lakshman Fernando, went on air yesterday. Quite rightly, it celebrates a remarkable achivement by a remarkable player. It will not, however, be as funny or as irreverent as the original Murali song, delivered with gusto by England's Barmy Army, though lately abandoned. It is based entirely on the controversy which surrounds (or rather surrounded) the legality of his bowling action.

It is sung to the tune of "Row, Row, Row, Your Boat" and goes: "Throw, throw, throw your ball gently down the pitch, Murali, Murali, Murali, isn't life a bitch." No air time for that yesterday. Murali said he would not be singing Spin Wizard himself but was happy for it to be released.

Australian music legend, Alston Koch has released the only song personally endorsed by Muttiah Muralitharan. The stunning video of Alston Koch's song 'Murali' can be seen on http://www.alstonkoch.com

The world famous music website has also featured the Murali Song, please see:

The tribute to the world's champion bowler has had airtime in three continents. This is a fitting tribute to the great Muttiah Muralitharan.
