Football: What Capello didn't say

Becks By Sam Wallace

“David Beckham can be my Cristiano Ronaldo”. Coming from the lips of Fabio Capello, that’s explosive stuff. Explosive if he had actually said it on Wednesday night. Which he didn’t.

Some of today’s newspapers quote Capello directly comparing Beckham to Ronaldo, others say that he made the comparison indirectly. Some, including The Independent, attempted to give a fairer picture of what he said in response to two related questions about how Wayne Rooney would function as a lone striker.

Fundamentally it was put to Capello that Rooney would not be able to operate the same way as he does for Manchester United without the likes of Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez around him. Capello responded by saying that England still had good players around Rooney, like Beckham. He never once mentioned Ronaldo by name.

You can read the exact terms of the conversation below. I’ve just transcribed it again, this time word-for-word, from my digital recorder which I was holding about ten inches from Capello’s face when he gave a private briefing for the chief football writers of the English national newspapers on Wednesday night after the game against France.

Question from The Independent: “What did you think of Wayne Rooney playing on his own?”

Capello answers in Italian.

Translator “Erm, he played, the way he plays he is currently playing for Manchester United. I played them tonight … I played him and Steven Gerrard the way they are currently being played in their own clubs.”

Capello adds more in Italian.

Translator: “That’s what I wanted ... to see them playing in the same position tonight.”

Question from The Times: “You don’t have a player like Ronaldo to play with Rooney and you don’t have a player like Torres to play with Gerrard, do you?

Translator translates question.

Capello responds in Italian, he mentions only Beckham, Rooney and Torres by name.

Translator: “I have a David Beckham” – Capello briefly interrupts, then translator continues - “and Rooney can be the Torres. And I believe they are both good players.”

Clear now? According to the Gazzetta Dello Sport’s London correspondent – who has exacting standards – this particular translator was good so I think we can be sure that the translation was on the money. Best advice for Capello? Learn English fast.

Do you really think the hacks won't twist his words if he speaks in English? They need to show more respect for their profession and report what was actually said; the onus is completely on them not to mislead their readers.

Good to know there are some journalists out there for whom the truth is still more important than the sensationalist headline.

Nice article. The last two sentences made me laugh! I think the frontline of England would work really well if both Rooney and Gabriel Agbonlahor teams up. If I was Capello this is going to be the squad that I will choose :
Foster - Ferdinand - Terry - Micah Richards - Ashley Cole - Carrick - Joe Cole - Beckham - Steven Gerrard - Agbonlahor - Rooney.

You might be the world's most-read (and most-appreciated) columnist if you would simply do this for all footy "reports." Many thanks.

Good article which really makes the point that whether the answers are in english or italian,it just is'nt going to work !

well done!!

you should put it in your newspaper as well

What point are you making here?Im still as thoroughly bemused as to how he can possibly say beckham can be a help to rooney when the guy is so slow,so languid,so past it.When, even say in 2004-12006 when beckham had his legs did he ever provide any good service to rooney anyway?I dont remember a bean. The continued delusion over Beckham is nothing short of extraordinary.

your england people are strange ,your discuse about football are like shekspere poeme *much noise for nothing*
any couch has his idea for football,no all couch has same
idea for football, you can not judge capelo for this, the other risen he is not english is an italian you can not understand him.

Best Advice to Sam Wallace..find a suitable career.

Has the Independent really stooped as low as basic racism?

Because the idiot hacks don't get Capello we're in trouble?

Really?

Just remind me who got Mclaren in and Sven out?
