View from the Couch: John Terry is made of sterner stuff

Jt By Henry Deedes

I have no idea what it must be like to dislocate an elbow. Like many fellow couch-ionistas, I am forever whacking my funny bone against the arm rest as I wrestle to locate the remote - which is usually buried beneath a cushion, keeping company with the tablets of Extra and the loose change that have been similarly gobbled up by a hungry sofa.

I find the sensation the most painful thing in a long list of malcoordinated domestic habits that I have developed - such as banging my head on the low frame of my cupboard door or treading on the upturned prongs of Mrs Couch's unplugged hairdryer.

So I can only assume that to wrench the same bone from its socket after it comes off worse in a clash against the knee of the world's best goalkeeper must be nothing short of full-scale bloody agony.

I mention this after another typically blinkered observation from the "jobs for the boys" panel who make up Match of the Day's team on Sunday evening (see Couch passim), after Chelsea's John Terry emerged to do a lap of honour during Chelsea's final match of the season against Bolton.

"I think Chelsea would have been better off sending him home to rest" said Gary Lineker, to nods of approval from Messrs Shearer and Lawrenson.

No doubt they would have been. I dare say the thousands who go and watch Chelsea grind out results week-in week-out would similarly benefit from an extra day's rest at home with the family, not to mention sticking the 50-odd sheets they fork out for each game away for a rainy day. But they don't. Which, presumably, is why JT swallowed the painkillers and stayed behind to wave the fans off after another successful - albeit so far fruitless - season.

To be a Chelsea fan is not straightforward. Roman's millions ensure Chelsea can afford to buy any player they want, which, of course, they often do. But it's not always pretty. And as much as they admire Didier Drogba for his undoubted genius, they're usually the first to deride his tendency to react to a mere shoulder charge as though he has been mowed down by a Stalinese firing squad.

John Terry broke through a pain barrier to acknowledge all this. How terribly English. Don Fabio is said to be reticent about handing Terry the England armband because of his public demeanour in the past year. He could do worse than give him another look.

Good article. Completely agree about Capellos's stance towards Terry. Anyone who's watched the difference between him and other contenders such as Ferdinand must realise how appropriate he is for the role. This recent event just puts the icing on the cake. There is no better candidate in England right now, with the vast exception of Gerrard, but he simply goes missing when the pressures on.

So its your reaction to a dislocation that deems you worthy or not of England and the captaincy? Well step forward Kevin Davies - dislocation, 'popped it back in' and played on. Well done that man.

Let's not make half-baked assumptions on some sort of 'English' nobility based on the fact that he stayed half an hour late at work pottering around with his kids in his flip-flops.

And the comparison with Drogba is cheap. It actually hurts more to be kicked by people than it does to do the kicking.

Totally agree Ashley Grimes. Drogba smashed nemenja vidic's face up with his kick. He is a dirty player and a drama queen, both at the same time. Lets just hope John Terry is fit enough for the Champions League final and worry about the rest later. In regards to the comments made by Lineker, maybe John Terry was asked to go or offered a lift home but wanted to stay.

Those elbows could come in handy on Wednesday when Chelsea meet United. I think that the team that has the most fight in it will win the Champions League. In fact I think the game will be a war. I fear for United here. They have played the better football this season. But Chelsea are a renegade team run by its players; and they are prepared to do anything to win. With the likes of Terry and Drogba running amok, United will need a strong referee to win this one.
