I see there's a bit of a debate raging in Cumbria over whether Gregg McNally's debut last week was the best ever by a Whitehaven player.
I'd broaden out the discussion a little by asking when we last saw a more stunning first appearance for any club.
In case you missed it, McNally is the 17-year-old schoolboy who played scrum-half against Salford last week and was largely responsible for their shock 26-22 defeat. He scored three lovely tries, kicked superbly, ordered his pack around and generally looked the best prospect since.....well, since who?
If we delve back a lifetime or two, it's fair to say that players like Alex Murphy and Billy Boston made a pretty instant impression on the game.
I remember Sean Long making a rather marvellous debut for Wigan, before they made the decision - for which they are still paying to this day - to fire him off.
Then there was Sam Tomkins, with his five tries - ironically against Whitehaven - for Wigan last month.
That's really the measure of what Mcnally achieved. Apart from him and that canny veteran Tane Manihera, the Haven side was similar to the one that let in a hundred at the JJB. Okay, they weren't playing a Super League side, but they were up against the overwhelming NL1 favourites and, without McNally, there is no way they would have won.
No wonder that Leeds have already got their hooks into him. He is to train with them in September and they will no doubt monitor his progress and try to make sure they have first refusal.
It's not going to be easy, even for such a talented young player. National League opposition, starting with Featherstone this weekend, will be targetting him and trying to shake his composure.
He looks good enough to weather that. In the meantime, can anyone remember a better debut? And what happened to the player when the initial excitement dies down?
