Rugby League: Fox on the run and other news
Just for a moment, I looked at an e-mail headed "England send for Peter Fox" and thought it must be an unexpected recall for the veteran coach and subject of last week's dispatch. Having eliminated him from enquiries, that left the Hull KR winger of the same name - but no relation - who is indeed in the England team to play France on Friday night.
Rumours started to circulate on Sunday night that Fox would be the pick in place of the injured Gareth Raynor, although Rikki Sheriffe might have been preferred had he been fit.
I hadn't particularly spotted young Fox coming up on the rails, but his last couple of performances have been particularly good. You don't have to do that much to get to the top of the heap as an english winger at the moment.
As suspected, Joe Westerman has been confirmed as travelling reserve, although his day will surely come - probably during the World Cup at the present rate of progress.
Great news for Castleford as well that they've manasged to tie up Michael Shenton on an extended contract. Plenty of clubs would like Westerman and Shenton, but it's essential they hang onto them.
And one nice story from the David Topliss funeral that packed Wakefield cathedral on wednesday: Mick Morgan told the tale of a game against Huyon that "kicked off, big style." Even Toppo joined in the brawl and happened to be the one spotted by the ref, who sent him off. The Wakefield players closed ranks around him, though, so the ref couldn't be sure which was the miscreant and he played out the 80 minutes.
