Love the cycle lane book. Just back from the continent where a cycle lane really IS a cycle lane, not just a white line. There's a great one over a bridge in York which starts out on the road, then halfway over the bridge switches to the pedestrian path, then 50m later switches back onto the road. I can't imagine who thought that would be a good idea.

I dont know if it has been pointed out before, but do cyclists at large really think cycle lanes were put there for their benefit? In the micro management world of local government, the targets for 'how many Km (sic) of cycle paths have we created mean that the cycle path is simply a instrument of payment by results. One might hope to believe that parliament and the civil service is populated by honourable men, who wanted to further the interests of cyclists and reduce the carbon footprint. However, not so local government aparatchiks. I have yet to see any convincing legal argument or judgement that cyclists should use cyclepaths. Stick to the roads!

I'm right now in Amsterdam - I must say - it's fantastic for biking!
