Ethics Girl: The Fife diet

By Sophie Morris

Dieting at this time of year is not advisable, but a group of strong-willed families from Fife have determined to stick to their regime over the Christmas period. It's not all tofu and herbal tea though - far from it. A wee dram of whisky will be in order and no doubt some smoked salmon. The dieters have decided to only eat local produce for a year, partly as a protest against the mileage food clocks up as it flies to your kitchen table and partly to improve their diets by eating more fresh food.

There was a piece on Radio 4's Today programme this morning charting their progress. After just a few weeks they feel healthier and have lost a bit of weight - what you'd expect from cutting down on sugary, processed foods. They have rediscovered the joys of cooking and have been spending more time in the kitchen. Which is commendable, but is there no way around the laboriousness of making everything from scratch, as satisying and tasty as it might be? Is mum to stay at home all day again peeling vegetables and kneading dough?

Or even dad? It's not that laborious - in fact it's sometimes quicker than so-called fast foods. And it does taste a thousand times nicer. And won't kill you.

It is time intensive - that's true - but cooking can be fun!
