I was so very lucky to attend seminars and symposia with Wilhemina in the 80s in Washington. She was the author of a large picture picture book on called Gardens of Pompeii and several others: also, monographs exist from the symposia.
Much of what we now take a common was codified by the Romans who made use of Greek, Egyptian (Ptolemaic) and Mesopotamian gardens, plants and landscape features.

how VERY interesting. I wonder if any sites exist where people have been able to study gardens in Egyptian or Mesoptamian culture, using the same archeological techniques... or was it from painting and literature that they've worked out the connections?
