At first we were going to devote this entire post to discussing the appearance of Anna Friel's semi-opaque tights on the cover of Esquire (see left), but then our editor pointed out that...well, there's really only so much you can say about tights. So we've broadened our focus somewhat, and have decided to focus not only on the subject of Anna's tights but also on the feminist implications thereof. (And, trust us when we say this, there are many).
Ok, so where were we? Oh yeah: Anna Friel is, like, totally wearing tights on the cover of Esquire! I know right? Pretty frickin crazy.
No but really, we actually mean it this time. Because when, I'd like to ask you, was the last time you saw tights on the cover of a men's mag? Think about it very hard for a second and I think you'll find it was...hmm, never. Because boys don't like tights. They like stockings. And suspenders. (I know this because in my first year at university, one particularly misogynistic, er, 'friend' of mine said something along the lines of "Errgh. You're wearing tights. That's possibly the unsexiest thing I've ever seen." to which my response, if I remember rightly, was "Hmmm well you can eff right off and out of my room then.)
So what, I'd like to ask you, does all this mean? Does Anna Friel's posing nearly naked in her tights represent a victory for womankind - a kind of triumph for comfort over coquette - or is it a form of female trivialisation through sexualisation - a modern variation on the old sexist 'slutty nurse' model?
We are, we must confess, torn on this one. Because while we are naturally outraged at the idea of objectification, we also quite like the idea of wearing tights underneath our shorts without feeling like one big turn-off when we, um, start to peel off said shorts and tights. Uh-oh! Anyone else feel like they're digging themselves into a hole? Time for a snap judgement.
So: Anna Friel's tights. Ummm, well at least she's modeling something that she might actually wear in real life. But is it just me or... are there no knickers under those tights? Tsk, like anyone would do that.

At the risk of sounding like a total sexist twerp, perhaps the elfin Rochdale beauty's wearing a pair of those 'tummmy-flattening' jobs?
She's had a kid you know....
:-o
[I know, "ooh, saucer of milk for table two!"]
Also, on the subject of the bloke at Uni who found your tights a total turn-off:
if *you* had seen *him* strip down to a pair of white y-fronts and some black socks held up with sock-suspenders, would it have been 'ok' for you to describe *that* as a total turn-off, or to laugh at his appearance?
Or would it have been an example of a brain-dead sexist misandristic put-down that devalued him as a Man?
Some garments are just physically-unattractive to the point of risibility.
Tights, like their male equivalent, are one example of such garments.
Comfy? Sure.
Warm & Sensible? You betcha.
Sexy?
You're havin' a larf ain'tcha?
;-)

ummm There are tons of porn sites and movies dedicated to pantyhose -- they obviously turn someone on.

I happen to love white y-fronts and sock suspenders, Eddie.

All I can say about the cover pic is "Wow!" I guess I'm one of the guys who thinks that tights and legwear really accent and enhance the view of a woman's form... If they don't feel good, then you're probably wearing the wrong size.

Plenty of guys love seeing women in tights. Obviously the mag's art director agreed.

I love pantyhose/tights. forget those stockings and garter belts. Those are something my grandmother wore during WWII. A nylon/lycra rear is such a turn on.

Honestly, I just don't get this whole tights-are-not-sexy dogma, I really don't.
You ask your average guy whether he would prefer a girl to be bare-legged (*shudder*) or to be wearing tights and the vast majority are going to go for the tights, it really is a no-brainer.
Tights make a girl look more feminine, *way* more classy and usually more sexy to most guys - especially the more intelligent guys amongst us ...
Better/sexier than stockings/holdups? Well each to their own on that point but any suggestion that tights are not sexy or are not liked by men is ridiculous!
