I have a tempestuous relationship with books and websites that aim to declutter my computing life. While I can't deny that I enjoy reading Lifehacker, the temptation to try out every single one of their streamlining and time saving devices has the obvious and irritating side-effect of stopping me doing the things that I should have been doing while I was busy de-cluttering my life.
Perhaps one in twenty of them turn out to be useful for me, and the rest get jettisoned within the week, if not the day. But I did enjoy this non-Lifehacker tip to reorganise your desktop – simple, easy to implement and has an immediate effect on your working routine.
Well, I say that, but this is assuming that, like me, saving things to your desktop – rather than in neatly organised folders within your Documents or My Documents folder – is a habit that you can't break. You worry that if you save something out of sight, then you'll forget it. And as the Desktop is always visible, you know that you'll always have instant access to that file, rather than navigate your way through nests of folders, But the thing is, your desktop will often end up looking like the picture above.
A solution which indulges your habit but also allows you to find stuff and reorganise it quickly is here. Just open up your current desktop background image in an image editor, like GIMP or Photoshop. And just draw on it, dividing it up into zones that make sense for you – current work, downloads, to file, to read, to listen to – and re-save the image. Choose that re saved image as your desktop background, and lo, an instant no-frills desktop filing system.
Everything still visible, nothing hidden away in folders, but now you can neatly organise it all. Egg, bacon, chips and beans fan Russell Davies did his own cheap and cheerful version over the weekend, and here's my own.

I have one folder on the desktop, which everything goes into, and it's called "the desktop". Psychologically, I don't feel like I'm filing anything away, but I don't leave anything to distract me. Pathetic how these little conceits work.
But I want to see that jpg called "powerful thyme"! v intriguing...

"We @re Ch@nge Radio" mp3 on your desktop - didn't take you for a conspiracy crank, Mr.M

Ant - it's a fantastic episode during which David Aaranovitch completely demolishes the silly little schoolboy pranksters. Essential listening whenever I get depressed about conspiracy-obsessed swivel-eyed loons.
