Everybody seems to have liked him and his gardens, a very difficult trick to pull off when the gardening world seems increasingly snarly. I suspect it/he is/was popular because there is so much planting and so little arse about it all. Lots of pretty flowers, that's the key to happiness.

He was also incredibly posh and grumpy, which most English people seem to regard as excellent qualities in an old man. He makes such funny grumpy comments in his books, especially about incompetent gardeners; using words like "ignoramus" which is probably funny just in itself.

And he had an eye for colours and shapes of plants beyond the normal human range of vision, and he was never influenced by fashion, growing all sorts of totally off-trend things like dahlias and canna lilies (my god, the very thought).

And he just knew such a lot about plants, and every word he wrote you could pore over.
