At last, some positive media coverage for Gordon Brown. Not a moment too soon for Labour MPs, who breathed a sign of relief as TV bulletins led with by his strong attack on the "stolen" election and Zimbabwe and plans by the Bank of England to lend billions of pounds to banks secured against their mortgage portfolios in an attempt to ease the credit squeeze.
Brown finally came off the fence over Zimbabwe during a visit to the United Nations in New York. One Labour man told me it reminded him of Brown's "strong leadership" phase during his honeymoon last summer. So perhaps all is not lost if Brown can show such decisiveness across the piece.
However, Brown's trip to the US is not going according to plan. Media coverage, both in America and Britain, is being overshadowed by the visit by Pope Benedict XVI.
It's incredible that the White House didn't tip off the Brits that Brown's trip would clash with it. A sign, perhaps, of a more distant Anglo-American relationship. Robert Tuttle, the American Ambassador in London, insisted today: "The relationship is just as strong as it has ever been."
I am not so sure. There is real tension over Britain's withdrawal to an "overwatch" role in Iraq while troubles in Basra continue. And Brown has done something that Tony Blair never did - differentiated between the US president and his country.
In media interviews, he bends over backwards to say he is "very pro-American." But his body language makes clear he is not pro-Bush. Expect it to be warmer when a new President takes over next January. No matter whether Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton or John McCain - all of whom Brown is due to meet today- emerges as the winner.

I wonder if this gutless unelected twonk realises that chanting "I am very pro-American" is not a policy calculated to enhance his floundering status with British voters?
To say he's not pro-Bush is clearly wrong. Whilst Chancellor this fat J.Arthur-Ranker *stole* the money British tax-payers had contributed to pay for Education in the UK, so that it could be used to underwrite a yankee-doodle PNAC military escapade in which Britain had no interests whatsoever. He's a gutless idiotic yankee suck-up, a traitor, a coward, and a liar. He's collaborated with the yankee Nazis on the cover-up of the deaths of British soldiers killed by yankee fire.
Denied a vote on this berk's tenure, British voters want a leader who is going to LEAD (not bleat and wring his fat useless hands), and who is going to put BRITAIN'S interest first - not Uncle Nazi Sam's.
It doesn't matter which of the candidates for the American Presidency finally wins. Gutless Gordon is headed for a one-way showdown with British electors who are going to kick his useless, gutless hide to Kingdom come, and end the political career of the Dan Quayle of British politics as quickly as possible.

I say McGowan, have you considered therapy. You sound a very rude, angry, doom-mongered soul. Cheer up.

The only useful thing Gordon Brown has done is to vote for the Iraq liberation (there was no war, the people there wanted and are entitled to freedom).
Apart from that he is not fit for purpose.

I see the Gutless Gordonistas are out in force today? One million dead in Iraq, and the Nu Labour functionaries still deny the man who paid for it all - and licks the yankee boots of those ordered it - is a Nazi?
"Rather OTT"??? Oh dearie-me, "Star Right", what a tosser you are. "Don't mention the war", eh?? "I say, you bally chaps! He mentioned the war! How tasteless of him, what?"

Neil, you're always entertaining to read, but these posters are right, when you keep calling people Nazis, it just sounds like you've been drinking far too much coffee. I hope we get a series of posts about Russia's ethical foreign/domestic policy soon and will look forward to seeing what you have to say when that happens. My guess is you will go rather quiet.
