They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but surely this is going a bit far. In their quest to make Playstation 3 the ultimate home entertainment system, the bods at Sony seem to have been spending a bit too much time playing their rival's console, the Nintendo Wii.
Despite their new DualShock 3 pad still not having a confirmed Europe release date, according to gaming website gamesindustry.biz, Sony are busy developing another new controller – and, interestingly, it may have been inspired by Nintendo's revolutionary Wiimote.
With its higher price tag and more serious content, the PS3 has thus far found its niche with the more serious gamers. But apparently, the new control pad breaks into two pieces – both of which contain an "accelerometer", used to sense motion. Presumably Sony's strategy is for the Playstation 3 to offer the type of casual games which have made the Wii such a hit, and a large part of the Wii's popularity is its motion-sensor controller.
With certain developers apparently already in possession of working units of the new PS3 controller, it might not be too long before we see Playstation 3 owners playing Sony's answer to Wii Sports.

I just ran into the video of the new controller...check it out!

right, before any bitching occurs, lets just get this clear. Sony has taken in the fact that the wii is a more family friendly console, and has taken the smart route. If this is true, kids are going to be able to play more games on the ps3, as the ones out now are DEFINITELY not suitable.
I think this is quite a good move. So fanboys, please hold back with negativity! lets keep the world a happy place!

Other than the fact that Nintendo absolutely, positively, owns the patent on split controllers, this is an interesting and not unpredictable development.
Sounds like Sony, along with Nyko, could end up paying out an additional fortune to Miyamoto and Co.

Nice move Sony. I want to see this working with Fight Night!
RandyChimp - you can't own a patent on that ('that' being the ability to have a two part controller)...Just on the way you do it. Otherwise there would only be one car, and one motorcycle, and one TV, (LOL) and one video game console!

Sorry not RandyChimp, Jed...

Uhh actually ELOHIMFETUS, Patents actually do allow someone or a company to own complete production rights over their creation for a period of time. I'll use your own examples in a sense. If a new mode of transport was invented today, and the company took a patent protecting it, other companies wouldn't be able to produce it for the period until the patent ran out, The whole idea of a patent is to provide protection in order to give increased incentive for people to produce and innovate new creations allowing them to reap the rewards, and not have them instantly recieved by people who merely copy. Its just economics, innovation wouldn't occur if the people who did it recieved nothing for their risk. Otherwise the second a new thing is created you would have every company creating the exact same thing the next day. Nintendo actually do own the patent currently, hence the case against Nyko, and sony will have to be very careful as not to fall into the same issue against nintendo.

The Wii completely pwns the Sony PS3 in any way, shape or form. The PS3 sucks so much that they have to copy the greatest system of all time. Since the PS3 has only one good game they will fail miserably.

Lmao i think it's quite funny hilarious at that. Didn't microsoft do the exact same thing for their X-Box 360. I liked the name of the article PS-Wii lol it does sound like something sony will name their console. I still think that nintendo will win the generation tho cause even if they loose third party developers they got metriod, zelda, mario, kirby, olimar, pokemon and fox to fall back on.

That is so hypocritical of Sony. When the Wii was released Sony dismissed the Wii controller as a gimmick and tried to discredit it.
When Wii sales were booming, Sony say that the Wii is not on the same playing field as the PS3, so cannot be compared to it in terms of sales.
Now they want a piece of the pie, and copy the Wii controller concept. This is a compliment to Nintendo with Sony eating humble pie, but also appears to be a blatant rip-off.
Nintendo works hard to create innovations in gaming since the SNES days, and then other console companies copy their ideas. But I suppose that's life, and evolution of gaming.

Sony could release a wii-mote type controller undled with loads of games and a huge list of future supported titles. But I don't think PS3 owners will take to it and I'm sure it won't shift consoles. Have the Wii at $500 at launch and no-one would have bought a Wii even after trying it.
I don't think Sony will release this new controller due to there being no supported titles.
