Today's Daily Mail weighs in yet again on Viagra, this time saying that ever-younger men are taking the drug in an attempt to keep up with the so-called "Sex and the City generation", illustrated by Carrie Bradshaw wearing a man-eating flower.
Isn't this 'trend' story about ten years too late? Men have been taking Viagra recreationally since it was introduced a decade ago for a variety of reasons: they wanted to have multiple orgasms, stay hard for hours or perform long after their erections should have wilted due to alcohol or drug use.
I suggest that Dr John Tomlinson, who says: "Men may feel emasculated by modern women and feminism has taken its toll", look a bit deeper.
I'm not saying that men are immune from performance anxiety, but I think that selfishness is driving the Viagra craze. The mentality of I wanted to go four times in one night but had already had twelve pints and done a few lines, more than any desire for intimacy.
All of my female friends whose partners did not have a genuine medical need have insisted that they stop taking the drug, and though I've experimented with Viagra a couple of times myself I would never want someone I cared about to risk their health.
What is sad is that men seem to think that most women want porn star-style sex, when so much of it is about what looks good on camera rather than what actually gets women off. Forget the Viagra, if this were really about pleasing women we would have a national epidemic of cunnilingus.

Surely 30 minutes of satisfying and climactic sex would be preferred by both genders over 4 hours of unrelenting friction burning humping?

Ah recreational drugs... it's always so important to keep up with which ones are "good" and which are "bad". And with the Tories now leading the way on freedom matters here in the UK, it surely won't be long before we can choose for ourselves what we do in the privacy of our own homes.
Funny how viagra fell so easily into the good category innit?

R! but the Torys are also very anti 'drugs' - it will be very difficult for them to break out of that traditional mainstream political mentality, where actual truth is thrown overboard in the constant quest for dumbed down scapgoating reactionary stupidity. This traditionally has kinda almost been lead by the taboids - in articles frequently written by hacks who shove ridiculas amounts of recreational drugs down their throats. But none of that is important. What is important is that Mr John Major type british nerd stays that way - ignorant of the sick abuses of power and willing to allow himself to be blagged by these ******'s.

It's been a while now. The wife told me she quite liked it when I did 'U No Wot' to her, but when she did 'U No Wot' to me it felt 'dirty'.
Which pretty much sums up the tapering off of our sex life.
'...if this were really about pleasing women we would have a national epidemic of cunnilingus.'
No problem! Does a fellatio epidemic go with it? (Oh heaven!)
A ladyfriend once asked me
"Why does a bride smile?"
Answer,
"Because she's just given her last blow job!"
Did you get it right?
Neither did I!

must've been before the bride met me.

Well, women may not like it, but as a gay man, I can safely say amongst gay men, viagra use is pretty much reaching epidemic proportions.
As recreational drugs go, it's pretty low on the danger stakes. As long as you're sensible (as I'd like to think I am) the risks are minimal.
For gay men at least, education would prove more effective than tighter controls.
So called "Porn star" sex may not be popular amongst heterosexuals, but us benders do seem to love it.
That said, I can't say I disagree with the main point of the article. Viagra use is largely driven by selfishness rather than some sort of desire for a greater level of intimacy. I suppose gay men can just cope with each others' selfishness more easily than women can with heterosexual men.
