Last week, gamers were blown away by object interaction in "Alone In The Dark". This week, it's the turn of "Battlefield: Bad Company" to carry the flag for crazily malleable environments.
As sales have shown, features like the spreading fire and breakable objects were enough to convince gamers to come out from behind the sofa and buy yet another game in the crowded survival horror market. The question is, can the latest incarnation of Battlefield achieve the same thing for the equally congested war genre?
It too is relying on the strength of a new feature of the physics engine in order to sell copies, and a frightening feature it is too for FPS fans. No longer can your in-game persona relax hiding behind a wall - because in Battlefield, there is a pretty high chance that if you do, that wall is going to come crashing down around you.
Literally everything in Battlefield, from the buildings and vehicles to the rocks and trees, is destructible. It is a welcome advancement from the environment of games like GTA, in which hedge rows and saplings are inexplicably tough enough to destroy cars if you crash into them. Once you start to use it to your advantage, all kinds of new tricks become possible; you can snipe through holes you've blown in walls, for example, or clear a route to your destination by destroying any buildings in your path.
The real revolution though, comes with the multiplayer online play. "Camping", the practice of tactically hiding in a discreet location in order to increase your chances of victory, becomes impossible when no surface feels really solid. While the servers have suffered from some problems, the overall experience has remained positive.
With brisk sales for these games justifying the hard work in developing such stand-out features, the real question is this; how long before we see all of these incredible environments brought together into one game?

Hi there,
Good article, you are definately right when you say that the extra features convinced me to come out and buy the game. They did !
Bit pathetic i know but if there is anything else that can be destroyed, where before it could not be then i am your man.
Love your blog and often wondered how i get a job like yours !
Were you a gamer before you got the job ?

How-do?
Wasn't actually thinking about buying Battlefield but it may well turn out that I do now. No real hiding place for Campers? No place to set up the Camping Gaz stove and get a brew on? Likin' the sound of this..yep, I'm convinced it's for me!?!
It's about time the Caravan and Camping Club got their comeuppance! It's about time I wreaked my vengeance upon their cowardly souls!?! ;-)
