Tinchy Stryder is the stage name of 21-year-old, Ghana-born grime artist Kwasi Danquah. The east London-dwelling rapper, whose music nods towards garage, dancehall and hip-hop, is about to hit the big time: he's already supported Jack Penate on tour and recorded with Wiley and Kano.
Tinchy started making music with his group Ruff Sqwad when he was just 13, but he's a charismatic solo artist in his own right, with a quick-fire delivery that has won him massive underground acclaim. With the album Star in the Hood already under his belt, Tinchy is set to release single "Stryderman" – a gritty, urban ode to life in the borough of Tower Hamlets – next week.
Here's the video for "Stryderman":
The word on the web:
- britishhiphop.co.uk
"Tinchy Stryder's status in the game is paradoxical: on the one hand he has a huge fan base and is able to pack out raves, but on the other – despite respect from his industry peers, commercial success has eluded the young star from Bow."
- exclaim.ca
"On latest single "Stryderman" I hear plenty of creepy, wonky synths that sound lifted straight from Escape From New York's wasted landscape. I can only imagine, somewhere right now, Snake Plissken is breakin' to this."

"If grime was the football world, Tinchy Stryder would be like your Michael Owens and Wayne Rooneys of today. He has had hype surrounding him from a very early age. You could be misled into thinking he is a lot older than he is…"
- sheenabeaston.blogspot.com
"Tinchy Stryder is one of the more well-known grime artists on the London circuit. Slowly making a name fo himself Stateside, he's found a formula for making excellent garage-style rap."
- mtv.co.uk/music
"Tinchy Stryder – 'the prince of grime' was introduced to the underground back in 2003 by the legendary Wiley when he was just 16. Since then he's honed his skills and built an impressive fan base."
