Tarte flambée at The Modern
This ultra-cool, ultra-modern restaurant at the Museum of Modern Art is a frame for the refined/rustic cooking of Alsatian born Gabriel Kreuther. The space is divided into snobs-and-yobs, with a no peeking barricade that gives all the garden/art views to those eating the US$85 a head dinner in the minimalist restaurant and nothing to those in the buzzy bar.
Even so, I'd rather hang in the bar for the coriander martini, the lychee juice and soda, and the tarte flambée, which is just US$14.
This Alsatian specialty is born again as a dainty nibble for uptown girls, with a painterly daub of crème fraiche on a paper-fine, plate-wide pizza crust, dappled with sweet onion and smoky applewood bacon: every bite sweet, sour, crisp, crunchy and creamy. Never have carbs been spread so thin.
