The good people of suburban Toronto are all in a lather at the moment because a tree trunk in a garden there appears to bear a resemblance to the Virgin Mary. It's a bit of a stretch to say the least but if you look at the tree in a certain way, a small part of the trunk very (very, very) slightly looks like Mary perched with her arms out stretched. Click here to judge for yourself.
It's not the first such strange sighting. Back in 2003 a decade old toasted cheese sandwich that had miraculously never gone mouldy and which its owner claimed resembled the very same Mary sold on eBay for £28,000 (see above).
Thankfully the Catholic church tends not to bother itself with authenticating such claims, because you know, it has bigger issues to get itself worked up about, like crucified frogs.
This week's tree-based sighting also provides ample opportunity to wheel out a classic YouTube clip from the vaults. A little less religious but equally ridiculous, the folks in Mobile, Alabama thought they saw a leprechaun in one of their trees around the time of St Patrick's Day in 2006.
This news report documents the strange tale. It's already had seven million views on YouTube, but no matter how many times one watches it doesn't fail to awe and amaze...
