So the great time-waster of the last year has bitten the dust. Leaving many devotees lost for words, Scrabulous, the massively popular Facebook application, has been removed from the site by Facebook's owners (aside from in India).
Facebook and the makers of the online game have been in a long running copyright dispute with Mattel, one of owners of the original board game, leading to the plug finally being pulled over the weekend.
So where does this leave people craving a little online distraction?
You could of course try Mattel and Hasbro's official Facebook version of their game. This, however, has left most Facebookers cold, with nowhere near the same amount of users as Scrabulous. That might change now that the latter has officially gone.
Or you could just move away from Facebook. Not being a huge Scrabble player, online or otherwise, its demise isn't causing me great concern (I once was reduced to using "the" in a Scrabble game, so you can see why). There are plenty of other ways you can waste time online while pretending to do work; some examples I've written about before are here, here and here. While I'm at it, here is another one I've just discovered. Guard that sand, y'hear.
Any other suggestions?

I thought my facebook page looked a bit different when I logged in this morning but I put it down to me having pressed the button to see what New Facebook looks like

If, like me, you are a bit sad about the demise of Scrabulous, you can turn to a real-time game of scrabble here at the Internet Scrabble Club: http://www.isc.ro/ It does require you to download some software, but it is free.
