An inevitable consequence of the "Have Your Say" Web 2.0 free-for-all is the plethora of preposterous comments that are left under blog posts, videos, photos, articles and goodness knows what else. Everyone has an opinion, and often these opinions have barely any relevance to the thing that's supposedly being opined upon. Of course, The Independent has, by and large, an upstanding, intelligent readership who refrain from leaving incoherent comments that largely feature the word "bollocks" – but, should that state of affairs ever change, a chap called Chris Finke may have come up with the antidote.
YouTube Comment Snob, as the name suggests, only works on YouTube, and is only any use to you if you're running a version of Firefox later than 2.0. But if you are, a quick installation of this handy extension can obliterate any comments that fulfil one or more of the following criteria:
– More than a certain number of spelling mistakes
– All capital letters
– No capital letters
– Doesn't start with a capital letter
– Excessive punctuation
– Profanity
Of course, this by no means guarantees that the rantings of swivel-eyed loons won't slip through the net, but hey, it has to be better than nothing. Now, if Chris can only get a similar thing working on Wordpress, LiveJournal, Typepad, Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, Blogger, Movable Type...
