Shopping Bag likes a brand whose tag-line is "our fashion is rubbish". It appeals. That's why, on this strangely warm but autumnal point in time, she wants to point you in the direction of Worn Again.
Worn Again is an enterprise which uses old materials from sources as diverse as planes, rubber tyres, old men's suits, prison blankets (and on and on: they find a LOT of stuff), and makes new, interesting, useful things - bags and shoes, namely. There was not a flicker of surprise on SB's face, then, when she read their host of ethical policies, and not a little delight to see that - whoop whoop - their products - are - actually - very - good - indeed.
The most recent collaboration, the results of which just went on sale this month, is a collection called Worn Again Virgin which sounds stranger than it actually is, I promise. Old Virgin Atlantic seat covers now combine with seat belts and bits and pieces from tents and the inner tubes of bicycles (really) to make satchels and wash bags.
The 1000 seat covers made 2000 bags (limited edition, by necessity) which will help Virgin on its way to achieve the goal of reducing its landfill by half by 2012 - something of retail karma, if you will.
Have a schootch around the site and feel free to jot down your thoughts - I know there's been a lot of chat about my Blackspot Sneaker post, and this organisation sounds familiar: plus, it's supported by Anti-Apathy, an organisation that lends its help to people who look for creative approaches to environmental or social issues. All very good in theory, but will you buy these things? Let me know...
