MixTape: Karen Dalton, the original folkstress

By Sonia Zhuravlyova

In this age of folk revivalism, I would like to bring to your attention Karen Dalton who is an unsurpassable folk and blues singer. A half-Cherokee from Enid, Oklahoma, she played guitar and banjo and became known as ‘the folk singer’s answer to Billie Holiday’. She ran with the Greenwich Village pack in the Sixties and played with Bob Dylan and Fred Neil.

Despite being commercially unsuccessful, she is a cult-figure among music lovers. Here is a video of her performing 'It Hurts Me Too' and she is absolutely captivating.

I didn't remember Karen, even though she came to my hometown and played with people I was aware of, particularly Fred Neil. She was really something and it's great to see that she is being listened to again!
