As you are probably fully aware by now, Shopping Bag remains dubious about the Olympics coming to London. But in typically magnanimous fashion, this won't stop me telling people who quite like sport about some related shopping opportunities - the seeds of a dictator may be in me, but today I'm all for the democracy of taste.
SO. The London Transport Museum is holding a special eBay auction until 14 September which includes the chance to buy 12 posters which graced the underground's walls in 2005. I do like the Art on the Underground project - it keeps things interesting on hot snoracious journeys (I also really like the Platform for Art book with a collection of the art that has appeared underground - makes a good present).
The posters you can bid for this week were part of the Olympic "Back
the Bid" series. They did their job
(thanks guys). As well as the
gymnast (above left) and the cyclists (on the right - and I admit I
quite like these little figures speeding around the track suspended in
a void), there are four other sporty categories: sailing, show-jumping,
rowing and field and track.
The auction isn't all about the Olympics though. If I was a resident of Shepherd's Bush or had particularly fond memories of the swinging times there I used to have there, I'd be bidding for this old tube sign. If the above applies to you BTW, you better get in there - other bidders are showing early enthusiasm.
Fan of buses and Supergrass? It'll be a dream come true for you, then, to win this model London bus signed by the group. There are also non-shopping related events you can bid for, like having a tour of the now abandoned Aldwych station, which has appeared in (the weirdly good, and utterly bizarre) V for Vendetta, and Atonement.
There you go. A little Friday afternoon entertainment, and all at my expense. Get train spotting! (I never thought I'd say that so encouragingly).
