Good day to you. Shopping Bag hopes you have not had an
interminable week. But if you have - then I have an event that might brighten the weekend that is tantalisingly beckoning.
It's a sale of products from Fine Cell Work. This is an excellent company which embroiders cushions (London skyline, left), makes rugs, quilts, and makes needlepoint all very contemporary. The difference from any other hip organisation is, though, that all the embroiderers are incarcerated.
Hand embroidered in 26 prisons across the UK, the products are of the highest quality, but there's an alternative motive, of course - Fine Cell Work is a charity, and was set up to teach skills, independence, and to encourage productivity. And because the prisoners are taught by volunteers from the Embroiderer's Guild and the Royal School of Needlework, many of those involved emerge with skills of the most professional standard, and the ability to take on difficult commissions. VIP designers have also donated patterns, so you could walk away with a Cath Kidston cushion (left, £75), hand embroidered, if you want. The charity sells the cushions on the prisoners' behalf, and they get to save up for accommodation outside of prison or, as William of HMP Maidstone says, "for the children to make up for what they have lost while I'm in here".
Tomorrow at Chelsea Old Town Hall (from 10am - 4pm), you'll be able to pick up many a unique thing in their Christmas sale. If, however, you're not a Londoner (and let's face it, most people in the country aren't, although you wouldn't think it if you read newspapers sometimes), fear not: there's a website all year round: click here.
Here's an idea too: if you want to sponsor a prisoner's training, you can pay £50/£100 and get their first cushion (size depends on donation!) a few weeks later.
So. There you go. Have a weekend that is blissful, and if that's not possible, bearable at least. Ciao.

For the first-time home buyers, Short sales and foreclosures present the best opportunity to purchase properties at discount rates.
