The University of Tehran, the oldest modern university in the country, has always been a cradle for politics. That may explain Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's choice of a chancellor; Farhad Rahbar, a previous Deputy Minister for Intelligence who was in charge of economic intelligence and counter trafficking for four years.
Let me remind you that 1999 witnessed UT student protests and blood on the walls of the halls of residence.
Not only has UT not forgotten dissent ever since, but it prides itself on being a major force in toppling the monarchy in 1979 and in the victory of the Islamic Revolution.
In an amusing comment last week, Rahbar (left) suggested that uniforms should
be introduced to ensure that students abide by the Islamic dress code.
I've been imagining the 30,000 students of UT all in grey or brown
(that's as merry as I can envisage), carrying flags and marching up and
down the university campus.
Ingenious.
Thinking he owed an explanation to students, Mr Rahbar also made it clear in his speech that the reason he implemented security gates and the use of access cards was not at all security but because of the lack of sufficient university resources. He added that it was necessary to make sure non-students would not be let in and suck up the benefits that the students are entitled to.
Well, take note those who believe in conspiracy theories. This has got
nothing to do with the upcoming elections in summer, nor would the
students fancy bringing the known elements of imperialism or suchlike
satanic mortals to their crib of learning, nor is anyone pulling
strings for UT to develop a Maoist milieu. Most importantly, it's of no
interest to UT to identify students within its premises should a riot
take place.
Do you think this uniform idea can be utilised in a pop video clip? Tell me who you think should be the singer.

Higher education is where the brightest and the most capable layers of the society are flourished and UT is no exception to this rule.
I graduated from UT in 1978 and recall from my last visit, the meeting of very highly intellectual students there. I do not think they would favor such dress-code-mentality.
If history is any guiding light to the future, in a similar fashion as 1979, I would strongly believe there will be many upraises triggered by students against the new chancellor and any pressure from the government.
