MixTape: Water Under the Ponty

By Catherine Gordon

Welsh rockers, The Stereophonics, revealed that they teamed up with ex-drummer, Stuart Cable at a recent wedding. Small, dark and handsome front man, Kelly Jones, remarked that the rift between them is now, "water under the bridge". Read more about it here.

There must be something in the water (excuse pun) as in the past few weeks there has been news of other potential reforms including Blur and The Strokes (well, they have been out of the scene for ages).

So who else would like to see reunited and make beautiful music at your fantasy white wedding, or failing that, who would you just like to see reform?

MixTape: Thriller night, thriller night etc...

By Catherine Gordon

Bruce Springsteen has claimed "catastrophic success" and has cancelled his annual Halloween celebrations of which he reportedly displays rather alluring Halloween fixtures for all to see. I’m thinking it may have looked something like this.

Other ghoulish news… "God of F**k", Marilyn Manson, is hosting a Halloween party in LA. Alas, in grey old London town celebrity parties seem to be rather redundant, so for residents of this city listed below are a few musical haunts to hang out this Halloween weekend:

MixTape: Stricken City - a band for our times

By Sonia Zhuravlyova

London foursome Stricken City is fronted by the endearing Rebekah Raa, whose warbley vocals are a breath of fresh air. Stricken City released their debut single a mere four months ago and have been causing waves around the UK music scene ever since. Their follow up single "Lost Art" is released on 17 November and here it is - a pop gem:

MixTape: Recession - The Musical

By Cat Gordon

I never thought I'd say this, but maybe raging ginger nut Mick Hucknall was right for, as we are frequently reminded, 'money's too tight to mention'.

So, while we have this jolly 80s hit in our head, isn't it about time bands, artists and drug-users alike became inspired by this life altering catastrophe?

MixTape: The Long Blondes' split ends

By Cat Gordon

Oh boo hoo. The Long Blondes have split up. It’s very sad that the guy had a stroke, I wish him all the best and hope he gets well soon. But...

Don’t get me wrong, the Long Blondes had some amazing songs; no, actually, not amazing, just well, good (not ‘well good’, said in a Northern twang sorta way, just, ‘well, good’, said like Stephan Fry pondering). Giddy Stratospheres, Once and Never Again, and Lust in the Movies are all good songs. The second album, Couples, was pretty shoddy, though a few songs off their early EPs and an Elastica sounding number, Autonomy Boy, were grand also; but is it really that much of a loss to the Indie music world?

MixTape: A few words with Iggy Pop

Iggypop01 By Larry Ryan

Iggy Pop has been knocking the hell out of rock and roll with raw power for decades, but now, as he displays his more artful side with a documentary about his painting exploits, we had a quick chat with the great man...

You reunited with the founding members of the Stooges when recording Skull Ring, do you think you will ever reunite with David Bowie to make any new music?
You never know. The way etiquette in the rock world works is that the larger giant approaches the smaller giant so that would be entirely out of my curfew.

MixTape: Top of the songs-to-resuscitate-someone-to Pops

By Jack Riley

A team from the University of Illinois medical school has found that the optimum tempo at which to perform CPR on someone who has just suffered a heart attack is 100 beats per minute. Attempting to help make the figure easily remembered in a crisis, the researchers suggested a song as a reference point for the tempo. And the song? "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees. Yes, really.

MixTape: Exactly what it says on the tin

By Larry Ryan

In the "Caught in the net" article in today's paper, I mentioned this website, which is offering a free 20 song digital mixtape download. You choose your mixtape from 100 songs, all of which can heard on the site before any downloading is undertaken.

I knew some of the songs on the site already but not all of them; so for my mixtape I kicked off with the brilliant Yeasayer song "2080" and then more or less went for a bit of a potluck selection after that. Below you can hear my mixtape...

MixTape: I can't believe I like Keane

By Cat Gordon

I have officially surprised my musical taste with a band which I formerly thought were a big pile of appalling musical rubble, toppled off with some poppycock; let's just say I wasn't very keen on, er, Keane.

But alas, and yes, alas, as admittedly I do take some joy in feeling passionate about hating bands, especially ones with dull names and bad looking people, who are all generally idiots and think they're cool, but I can now concur that Keane are actually alright, music wise anyway.

MixTape: A few words with CSS

Css2 By Jack Riley

Few musicians can match Brazilian disco-rockers CSS for their style and enthusiasm. Tonight they're headlining the Xbox MyGig event at KOKO in Camden, the line up of which was chosen by competition winner Francesca Peters, with support from Florence and the Machine and The Mules. Before the gig I had a quick chat with CSS's lead singer Lovefoxxx (pictured).
