Swiss officials have arrested six senior members of football’s governing body Fifa as part of an operation headed by the US Department of Justice and the FBI investigating allegations of corruption within the organisation.
Just a few days ahead of Fifa’s 65th annual conference, this morning saw high-ranking officials including a Fifa vice-president being escorted from a hotel in Zurich.
According to reports, the six Fifa members are currently being held pending extradition to the US.
The arrests are said to be in connection with alleged bribes worth around $100m (£65m) made over the last 20 years.
Those said to have been detained include, Jeffrey Webb, Fifa’s head of the confederation for North and Central America and the Caribbean, Eugenio Figueredo, president of South American football governing body Conmebol and Eduardo Li, who was due to join Fifa's executive committee on Friday.
Fifa announced that they would be holding a press conference in reaction to the news at their headquarters in Switzerland’s biggest city on Wednesday morning.
The press conference was due to take place 10am GMT with Fifa's Director of Communications and Public Affairs Walter De Gregorio fielding questions from the media but was delayed by 20 minutes.
