Harman's PMQs: Two Westminster myths exposed
Harriet Harman, standing in for Gordon Brown who is away, just comprehensively got the better of a carefully-prepared William Hague at PMQs.
This briefly exposed at least one Westminster myth: that Hague is a hilarious genius. Actually, his jokes - including an attempt to get in on last week's bullying over Brown getting "lost" amid the pomp of the palace - fell completely flat, apart from a few unhinged cackles from Tory backbenchers ready to laugh at anything the part-time after dinner speaker says.
Also interesting was how very well Harman did. Written off when she first entered the deputy leadership race, she has grown in confidence and today shrugged off the inevitable jibes about her Peckham flak jacket by saying she wouldn't take clothing lessons from "the man in the baseball cap". When Hague began on what he thought was safe territory, trying to talk up the Tories' feministic credentials by pointing out that Margaret Thatcher had been the first woman at the PM's despatch box decades earlier, Harman asked why it was that Hague was opposing her instead of her (female) shadow Theresa May. The "genius" Hague had, and gave, no response.
Seasoned sketch-writers tell us that Hague is ever-brilliant and even should be leader again (despite his un-courageous climb-down - subsequently followed by his successors - from "modernisation" to hard-right immigration and Europe campaigning in 2001). Some of the same commentators like to echo the familiar Westminster whisper that goes round about virtually every senior woman in politics: "she's not up to it". Will they revise their opinions in tomorrow's newspapers?

Not sure what you were watching but Hague's clown line was hilarious. Our whole office was laughing. Best PMQ for ages.

I thought that it was more or less even, perhaps WH had the edge, but Harperson's skill in dodging the questions about tax increases for the poor was to be commended

Thank you for your praise.
It's nice to hear kind words for a change.
(sighs)
What did you think of my jokes? I've been getting my special advisor to help me out. She's a stand-up comedian you know!

The word clown is synonomous with Boris Johnson who is the newly adopted White Hope and also White Feather in the Mayoral Election. Boris is under orders to say nothing at all and to keep out of the way. Even Lord Archer admits that Boris would be incapable of running London. However should Boris win then Hague and Cameron will be singing his praises until Boris starts to give us the benefit of his thoughts.

As usual Mr Macintrye seems to watching something completely different to everyone else! Another assured commons display by Hague opposite a complete light-weight and incompetant Harman. Does this woman just lack judgment or is she genuinely dim? Interestingly Maintrye tries to portray Hague as "hard right" Was this not what Hitler was termed as? Strange in a week when the Lords publish the most detailed study on immigration to have taken place. Its conclusion being that it is of no economic benefit to the UK. Tell us something we don't know! And when there is clamour across the country for a vote on the EU Constitution and everyone opinion poll known to man shows a heavily euro-sceptic population. Are these majorities all "hard right" This is usually the type of drivel you expect from someone who has clearly lost the argument
