The finger
By John Rentoul
My favourite story about Rahm Emanuel, Barack Obama's chief of staff, appointed yesterday, comes from a book that now deserves a wider readership in this country, The Thumpin': How Rahm Emanuel and the Democrats Learned to Be Ruthless and Ended the Republican Revolution.
It says that Emanuel lost most of the middle finger of his right hand when he was a teenager (frustratingly, it doesn't say how). And it relates the story of how Obama commented at a Democratic fundraiser that the accident had rendered Emanuel, who is famously foul-mouthed, "practically mute".

The loss of a finger happened when Rahm Emanuel worked at Deli counter and was an industrial accident caused by a meat slicer.

I hope that, he will be able to address the iniquities of Israel upon the Palestinians and start a period of real peace and reconciliation, by return of territory taken after the 1967 six-day war--but I won't hold my breath for any change at all.
