As culture curators, we always love a mixed-bag of a weekend – so that’s why we’ve got Japanese art, soul music and a Tarantino-inspired supperclub on the menu this week, with a few worthy escapades in-between…
This weekend’s agenda features a 30s style jazz speakeasy in Peckham and an evening of entertainment at a Boys’ school in Shoreditch (featuring the kind of school dinners you wished they served back in the day, we kid you not). Plus, there’s contemporary art, a festival of ancient culture and hip-hop manga magic at the Barbican, thanks to the amazing dancers that make up Boy Blue Entertainment. With a weekend like this, we think it’s safe to say there’s rarely a dull moment in this city.
We’re starting with an art crawl, as we pass through the Bloomsbury Festival, travel to Brixton for a new show on the British Black Panthers then head west to check out street art duo PipSqueak and their impressive solo exhibition.
Say cheese! We’re getting our pretty mugs shot by French artist JR, eating copious amounts of cake, enjoying the beautiful photography of Dayanita Singh and downing a cocktail or two as we’re reminded that while winter might be blowing in, the fab ways to work the weekend aren’t going anywhere for now.
We’re on a theatre, food and film mission this weekend as we head to Deptford for the new Soweto Kinch show, check-in to the Tricycle for NT: Live’s Othello and squeeze in free gelato, a Dalston Sunday lunch, drive-in cinema and maybe a trip to a festival in Elephant & Castle (if we can catch our breath, that is…)
We wrap up one of the busiest cultural months of the year with flicks (Raindance), food (Street Food Europe) and festivities (Clapton and Harvest festivals) for this weekend’s fun and games.
Like the weather, we’re in search of things a little “cooler” this weekend – but we haven’t had to look to far, thanks to a massive festival to mark the Olympics, the return of the Hyper Japan Festival, a “one-off” at the Design Museum, Sunday “apertivo” and a beach (in Camden, would you believe it?). Sand buckets at the ready!
Can the weekend get here already? We’re itching to check out the food, glorious food at the latest installation of the Feast festival – while further foodie delights come courtesy of Somerset’s massive new elBulli show and a newly-refurb’d Italian fish boutique which looks as beautiful as its cuisine… tuck in!
If a quadruple-bill of film, music, community and theatre festivals around the city doesn’t woo you this weekend, a Latino pop-up and unusual garden experience – that promises you the quirkiest indoor picnic you could ever imagine – might just do the trick.
Now that we’re into the start of the festival season, choosing what to do on the weekend should be a breeze – so make some space in your calendar for La Linea 13, Udderbelly and the Warp Films at 10 season over the next few weeks, while one-offs like the Dante Fried Chicken brunch and the Gaia’s Show of Hands are two destinations this weekend that simply can’t be missed.
