Would an African country voluntarily allow itself to be partially re-colonised?

Number 355 in my series of Questions to Which the Answer is No is asked by Working Class Tory, discussing the Hong Kong model of development advocated by Paul Romer, the economist. He has been pushing the idea of poor countries leasing parts of their big cities to rich countries for a while, but it [...]

Should Lembit Opik be Lib Dem candidate for London Mayor?

Mark Pack, a top Liberal Democrat blogger, asks number 354 in my series of Questions to Which the Answer is No.
Meanwhile, a nomination for number 355 has been submitted to the Committee, and will be considered in accordance with the procedures laid down:
Is George Osborne being hypocritical about Incapacity Benefit?

Has Wikipedia been overrun by left-wing trolls and junk historians?

Number 353 in my series of Questions to Which the Answer is No is asked by Guy Walters at the Telegraph blogs.
Wikipedia is not perfect, as Oliver Kamm has pointed out, but it never was. It hasn’t got worse and there’s no consistent bias.
Thanks to Benjamin.

Is Labour about to change its tune on Afghanistan?

Number 352 in my series of Questions to Which the Answer is No is asked by James Kirkup at the Telegraph, on the basis of a blog by Eric Joyce, the thoughtful Labour MP. I may be conflating ought to and will again, because if Labour thinks that a retreat to eco-pacifism is the way [...]

Is this Braintree’s next MP?

Tory Bear makes fun of a precocious press release from a 16- (or possibly 17-) year-old, Stephen Canning, who intends to be the next MP for Braintree and later prime minister. It’s cheap and it’s easy, so let’s join in: number 351 in my series of Questions to Which the Answer is No.
Is this Braintree’s [...]

Miscellany

“Miscellany” was the title of the diary/gossip column in the New Statesman when I worked there 1982-88. Most of the time, it was edited by the peerless Francis Wheen. I’d like to say I learned everything I know about journalism and writing from him, but he was so far out of my league that I [...]

Is Labour wise to denounce the Lib Dems as Vichyites?

So thick and fast come the Questions to Which the Answer is No that they are getting out of order, because I sometimes put them on Twitter first. This is number 349, asked by a frequent correspondent:
Are the screamy-shouties on the Labour benches wise to continue denouncing the Lib Dems as a modern version [...]

World Cup shocker: Prime Minister not watching game?

Hattie Garlick at The Times asks the above, number 350 in my series of Questions to Which the Answer is No, congratulating David Cameron on his grown-up refusal to pander to populist love of football by pretending to watch yesterday’s match. According to Paul Waugh, the Prime Minister was busy on other stuff during at [...]

Should Labour change its name?

A website called Yoosk (“You ask. We connect. They answer.”) has posed some questions about the legacy of 13 years of New Labour to a panel consisting of John Redwood, Stephen Twigg and me. We have answered in video clips that can be seen here.
The questions that I answered were:
Should Labour change its name (which [...]

Is BoJo ruling himself out of the Tory leadership?

Number 348 in my series of Questions to Which the Answer is No is asked by frequent contributor Mike Smithson at Political Betting. Just because Boris Johnson says he’s going to stand for London mayor again does not rule out a return to the House of Commons.
Number 346 is still pending.
