A toast to the women who taught me how to construct my own gender
There is an old gag (I am a big fan of old gags) which goes something like, “I’m not a doctor, I just play one on TV.” I like it, and identify with it, because it resonates with my own performance practice. I do not think of myself as a drag queen, but I know many people do.

Moral judgements have no place in the benefits system
If there’s one thing that David Cameron is clear about, it’s that he wants us all to do the ‘Right Thing,’ a phrase that popped up no less than seven times in his deeply moralising speech about the benefits system earlier this week.

Nick Clegg the hypocrite?
It seems to me that these newspapers are really complaining that Nick Clegg hasn’t been hypocritical enough. He’s betrayed his privileged social class, which I suspect is the real crime in the eyes of these pseudo-meritocrats.
