The last week has seen Korea dominate the global spotlight on the internet. Zany South Korean pop video Gangnam Style became the most liked and watched video on YouTube, and days later North Korea held a mass rally to celebrate the launch of their first satellite. Yet despite the online attention that has surrounded the two divided nations, the most intriguing Korean export of the year has gone largely unnoticed.

It’s the collaboration you’ve all been waiting for, K-pop rapper Psy has joined MC Hammer on stage at the American Music Awards to perform a mashup of Gangnam Style and U Can’t Touch This. The Korean star admitted that he has been a fan of MC Hammer for a very long time and that he was doing the dance over 20 years ago when the song first came out. While MC Hammer said that Psy has ‘moved the world’ with his dance hit.
I have tried to ignore it, but Gangnam Style by pop sensation Psy, seems to be playing everywhere. Now record executives from Universal Music Group, Psy’s record company, are talking up the prospects of other South Korean artists. The calculation is that K-pop artists could have be an international rather than just a regional success story.
