After 11 episodes of unquestionably differing merit, this week saw series two of Homeland draw to a close.
In many ways this week’s episode of Homeland – the penultimate one in this run – encapsulated the series as a whole, as it gave a brief glimpse of how much better it could be if it focused on its strengths rather than simply aping the often tired formula of other programmes.
While Homeland has never been a series that relied on a high degree of realism, this week’s episode really pushed the boundaries of incredulity and surely put an end to the pretensions its creators seem to have about it being a subtle, thought-provoking drama.
After last week’s rather disappointing episode, which tested the patience of many with its ludicrous sex scene and increasingly tenuous and tedious storyline, the series really needed to get back on track.
Following on from the last two gripping and action-packed episodes was always going to be difficult, but even so this week’s serving of Homeland felt like a bit of a let down.
After the violent drama of last week’s episode, which injected a much-needed sense of purpose into the series with major plot developments, this weekend’s instalment of Homeland seemed purely designed to crank up the tension a couple more notches.
If anyone was concerned that Homeland was going to have lost some of its dramatic edge following Brody’s switching of sides, then this week’s episode will have gone a long way to allaying those fears.
