Despite it being the end of our unusually pleasant summer – Bestival was there to close the festival season and welcome Autumn in style this weekend.

Boys Noize made his ascent to the top of the pile a few years ago, rising up around the time when Erol Alkan, A-Trak and their ilk were also climbing up the ranks. What’s trending and why?
A feeling of sensationalism and expectation predominated in hip hop for much of 2011. The hip hop media eagerly embraced a series of grandiose statements, gestures of brash young artists trying to make their breakthroughs, and welcomed the comebacks of older artists staking their claim to their genre.

In contrast with genres like rock and jazz, hip-hop can sometimes feel like a youngster’s game, with even the most celebrated rappers and producers often finding themselves unfairly cast out into the box marked ‘irrelevant’ once they hit the wrong side of 30, as listeners stay keen to latch onto the next big sub-genre, new regional scene or latest fad in rap.
