You see a lot of gyms following the presidential candidates through the primary process. Lots and lots of school gyms, usually pasted with banners that children had been obliged to paint up for their esteemed visitors in red, white and blue (not unlike the one shown here...) Kalamazoo for McCain! Upton for Huckabee! Occasionally, we get to see the inside of a town hall or old peoples' centre.
It can get better than that, though. I still remember skimming the trees of Kentucky with then incumbent President George Bush Snr in 1992 in US Army helicopters during his doomed effort to fend off Bill Clinton in the general election.
I like factories too. One of Huckabee's last stops in Michigan before voting Tuesday was a plant in Ypsilanti, next to Willow Run Airport, that in the WWII used to make bombers. The entire factory is on a one degree slope so they could roll the giant planes along as they put them together. Today, it belongs to General Motors and makes transmissions for Cadillacs and other large cars. The workforce used to be about 14,000 there, but now it's less than half that.
So while we tried hard to pay attention to Huckabee and what he was saying about bringing jobs back to Michigan, this reporter was far too engrossed in the robotic arms whirring around us and the unmanned vehicles zipping up and down the walkways between production lines. Fortunately, one GM employee was poised at all times to stop their progress whenever they were headed in Huckabee's direction.
