Is Hillary looking for an escape route?

By Leonard Doyle

Rumours are circulating that Hillary has abruptly canceled appearances on the morning TV shows tomorrow - though a Clinton spokesperson has since claimed she was never booked on any of the shows. Yet it indicates that all is not well at Clinton Central. In an unusually emollient speech (for her) in Indiana last night, Hillary seems to be signaling that she is preparing for a deal with Obama.

Even still, she seemed to threaten to continue her scorched earth policy, demanding that the Florida and Michigan delegates be seated. With little chance of winning the nomination, is she really going to go on and humiliate the presumed candidate in West Virginia and Kentucky?

Quite how long she stays in the race may well depend on her financial situation. Her bankrupt campign got a stay of execution after Pennsylvania, but the overnight numbers may tell another story.

Judging by Bill's glum face, they know its all over now and are looking for a respectable way out. One view is that Hillary expected to see Obama lose to McCain in November or win the White House, have an ineffectual presidency, ready for her to pluck the presidency away from him in 2012.

Click here for the text of Hillary's speech delivered in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Tuesday night in which she somewhat prematurely claimed victory in the Indiana primary.

Hillary's strategy is nolonger focused on 2008 but 2012. What surprises the "rest of the the world" (apologies to Newsweek) is the inability of the DNC to see through Senator Clinton's strategy or at a minimum put an end to the damage to Obama and the party via Hilary. Any semblance of a rule change on May 31st will certianly see African Americans go back to the Republican party from whence they came prior to JFK. The DNC may wish to take a leaf from the Surpeme Court ala Gore/Bush on May 31ST.The 'rest of the world" is waiting ,please be our guest,go ahead and self-destruct.Good luck DNC.

3 years ago as I witnessed the demise of the Presidency under another Bush, who has lived on the Iraq position, I forecasted that Hillary would be the next Democratic nominee for the Presidency, and my forecast was laughed at by many of my American friends. At the time of course I had never even heard of Obama, and did not think for one moment that MaCain would run again.
Having followed the election trail of Hillary-Obama these last few weeks one would not beleive they are in the same party, or in particular could be so scathing of each other which must help Mcain sleep soundly every night.
Between them they seem to be assuring MaCain's victory who despite his years may well prove to a pretty tough and rather right wing President.
Whichever Democratic nominee succeeds, and I beleive it will be Obama, the Democarts have done enough to give victory to McCain without him breaking a sweat.
PS. Hillary aside, I still think that Bill Clinton did a good job for the Presidency and the US as a whole.
Best luck to them a...
Mike

It looks like the Americans are moving away from "dynasty politics" - Bush/Clinton/Bush - Clinton???
Presumably that would make the much beloved Chelsea in line for nomination soon.
Get over these dynasties for God's sake.
Let's have a NEW broom so that American can regain some respect.
Right now it is an international joke and Hillary would just perpetuate the joke. She is just more of the same.

Condi Rice a "shoe in"
I think not. She is very much damaged goods. "Brown nosed" Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld et al for too long.
Sorry she has missed the boat and messed up big style.

I cannot believe that this woman will give up. There is nothing that woman will not do to gain the nomination. I have never seen/heard so much puerile viciousness coming from the lips of a prospective candidate. I cannot believe that her team of high powered advisors could allow her to speak with such abandon about a fellow Democrat! You get the feeling with her that if her advisors told her that bombing a nursery in her neighbourhood and killing a thousand children would elicit much sympathy for her and in turn rescue her bid she would say "Do it. It is for the greater good!"

It feels as though wisdom and grace must move in soon, even to the Clintons. (And I really respect their testicular stamina).
I cannot believe the charade of her continuing to proclaim her potential success will prevail.
Now is the ideal time to take the contest to the Republicans, and retain, and reframe, her loyal support.

As a US resident, I see hopeful signs that the population notices Obama is campaigning with integrity and uncommon restraint. Clinton has reverted to pandering (gas tax relief for the summer?) in her desperation, unfortunately. Of course McCain would do the same, but that's par for the course for the Republicans.

I believe Clinton will step aside soon, and dems will unite behind Obama.

The youth of America is behind Obama so his winning the nomination may have the positive result of 'activating' many new voters, and more importantly encouraging young people to do something. On the other hand, if Obama somehow loses the nomination it will be felt as yet another betrayal, which will alienate even more kids. If Obama becomes president I hope he has the sense to pursue major changes in the way America educates her youth. A country that saddles the kids with huge college loans before they even get a job is a country whose values are completely messed up.

With the 2 candidates there is an obvious novelty value - not only in running for the first black President or female President - but gaining the first female or black nomination for President from either party. The later scenario is guaranteed - thus is the novelty value.

Given that Hilary also means ex-President Bill - this road is less novel - perhaps given this season of novelty - Condi Rice - being black and a woman would have been a shoe-in.

Obama has looked assured throughout - Hilary not so - I do believe though that - Hilary would be a better option against McCain. This is why she may hang in there - rumour has it - she has a strong-bond through past favours with a lot of the super-delegates.

I think they are both smart enough to not damage each other too much - in fear of the winner of the nomination losing the Presidential race. I hope and think it will go to the wire - the only way it won't is if Hilary is on the ticket as the Vice-President - this should give the Democrtas the Presidency - as it will be like having 2 even 3 Presidents - with Bill there aswell. If this happens though - wow watch out for some serious in-flighting after they are sworn in.

She has every right to continue, though the only way she can win is through a scorched earth policy which will drag down every one with her - including the country. Hopefully she thinks twice about that!

Hillary isn't going to quit, unless of course her money does dry-up as you say. Her supporters are very much behind her still, as are Obama's. So this battle will rage on till the convention. As it should.
